The Troutman Sanders partner acting as receiver in the case of Kenneth Starr, accused swindler of stars, has filed suit against Martin Scorsese, claiming the famed director's production company owes Starr nearly $600,000, according to the complaint filed Thursday, which you can download below.
As you'll recall, Starr, a financial adviser, is accused of misappropriating at least $30 million in client money to fund his lavish lifestyle, which included his purchase of a luxurious Manhattan apartment (complete with wet bar!) shortly before his scheme unraveled last month. Starr faces both civil and criminal fraud charges. His go-to lawyer, Jonathan Bristol, a former Winston & Strawn partner who no longer works at the firm, has so far not been charged with any wrongdoing. Starr used an account controlled by Bristol to funnel money from client accounts, court records show. Bristol and Winston have repeatedly declined to comment, though sources familiar with the matter have told us for weeks that Bristol no longer works at the firm.
Back to Marty: As receiver, Troutman's Aurora Cassirer has the power to get Starr's finances in order, help clients withdraw money and collect any funds that belong to the estate for possible distribution to victims. She claims Scorsese promised to pay Starr 5 percent of his income in exchange for Starr's financial management services. But the manager in charge of Scorsese's account bolted Starr's company in January, about the time that clients began asking questions about why funds were coming and going from their bank accounts without authorization, court records show. The Starr exile took Scorsese's business to another firm, and Scorsese has since refused to pay Starr per the terms of their prior deal. (Scorsese has offered to pay a lesser amount, the suit says.)
